More NFL players are planning to kneel during the national anthem during Sunday games (Sept. 24) after President Donald Trump slammed football players who “take a knee” during his speech at his Alabama rally on Friday night (Sept. 22).

Trump told the crowd that it’s disgraceful when you see players kneel during the anthem. “[It’s] a “total disrespect of our heritage” and “everything that we stand for,” he told the audience.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say ‘get that son of a bitch off the field right now’?” he added, much to the crowd’s delight.

Trump then encouraged people to leave the game if they see a football player take a knee during the national anthem. Trump believes once that happens, NFL owners will start cracking down on those who protest during the anthem.

In response to Trump's comments, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the president's comments were "divisive" and demonstrated a “lack of respect” for the NFL and “failure to understand” when he attacks players who protest against racial injustice.

The Twitter reaction to President Trump's comments sparked the hashtag #TakeAKnee on Twitter. In addition, journalist Shaun King reported that 15 new NFL players are planning to kneel during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice in the wake of Trump's remarks.

Many people are Twitter are hoping that all NFL players will take a knee during the national anthem in a show of solidarity. Nevertheless, folks are ready to dump Trump.

"Don't allow racists to reframe #TakeAKnee as being a debate about anthem & flag. It's a protest of police brutality & racism," tweeted one person. Another user wrote, "I support Kaepernick and anyone else fighting for equality. #TakeAKnee."
