A police barricade in Bismarck ended over the weekend with an apparent suicide.NBC North Dakota News says police responded to a report of shots fired Sunday at the 200 Block of South First Street.

It was initially reported that two men were involved in an altercation. Police say one of the men entered his apartment and locked himself in.

Police called for a "shelter in place in the area and advised commuters to stay out of the neighborhood.

After a five-hour standoff, police moved in and found the man dead; he had apparently shot himself.

Authorities say MDU was also called to the scene as police smelled gas as they were moving in. The MDU workers were able to shut off the gas valve in the building's basement.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department, West Dakota Swat team, and the Bismarck Fire Department were also on the scene.
