Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and the Doors' front man Jim Morrison are just a few of the stars of classic rock scheduled to appear on postage stamps in the near future.

Rolling Stone report the U.S. Postal Service plans to release a series of musician-adorned stamps over the next two years.

Stamps featuring Hendrix and Janis Joplin will come out this year.  Next year look for a stamp featuring the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown.

The Postal Service is planning release of a Musical Icons series of stamps featuring artists from several genres, including Lennon, Morrison, Sam Cooke, Roy Orbison and Bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe.

The Postal Service admits some of these choices (particularly the English-born Lennon) may be controversial; a spokesman told the Washington Post that the series is part of an effort to attract younger demographics to the world of stamp collecting.
