Commentary: Turn Off the Bubble Machine!
The State Historical Society of North Dakota is considering buying the boyhood home of Lawrence Welk. Seriously (Bismarck Tribune).
Why, is a mystery to me. From what I know, Lawrence Welk couldn't wait to get the hell out of North Dakota! On his twenty-first birthday, he bolted for California, where he made a career performing cheesy music, doing a cheesy TV show, and cutting cheesy records like this one. The kindest thing to be said about Welk is that he was a savvy marketer and probably a better musician than his repertoire would indicate.
I say give him a roadside marker and leave it at that.
