Over the course of Friday and Saturday (June 22nd and 23rd), the seven rounds of the NHL Draft took place and four of UND's recruits were selected to NHL teams.

The NHL Draft took place in Dallas, TX over the past couple days with several young players finding eventual new homes with their respective NHL teams. The University of North Dakota's incoming freshmen class had four players taken:

The Ottawa Senators cleaned up their defense with a pair from UND's incoming squad. Bernard-Docker was previously named the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s (CJHL) top defenseman in 2017-18. Tychonick had 9 goals and 47 points in 48 games in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) last season, including 17 points in 11 playoff games.

San Jose traded up to claim Weatherby, who was named BCHL’s Most Valuable Player last season after leading the team in scoring with 37 goals and 37 assists for 74 points overall in 58 games.

Hain was claimed by the Flyers, who of course have a head coach that all UND fans are familiar with, Dave Hakstol.

For each of these players, their road to the NHL will begin at UND. The NHL teams will retain the rights of each player they drafted until 30 days after that player has left college.

The fact that four incoming recruits for UND were taken in the NHL Draft is certainly a credit to the team's scouting. With these guys flying around the ice at Ralph Engelstad Arena this fall/winter, the excitement continues to build for the 2018-2019 season for UND.
