Grand Forks Officials Set to Vote on Proposed Random Drug Testing Ordinance [POLL]

City Officials in Grand Forks are set to vote on a new ordinance that would allow for the City to initiate random drug tests on police officers, fire fighters, and 911 dispatchers.

According to the Bismarck Tribune, Fire Chief Peter O'Neill, Police Chief Mark Nelson and dispatch center Director Becky Ault are all backing the new ordinance.

There is an existing on the books in Grand Forks that makes it illegal for a city employee to be intoxicated while on the job. The new measure is being proposed due to the critical role that the police, fire department, and 911 operators play in public safety.

Chief O'Neill doesn't believe there is a substance abuse problem within the city's emergency responders, but thinks this pre-emptive measure is owed to the residents of the city.

The Grand Forks City Council is expected to vote on the measure Tuesday.
