The Bismarck Tribune has endorsed Heidi Heitkamp for the U.S. Senate. The Trib published the endorsement early Sunday.

As the Tribune notes, while the senator is currently trailing Republican challenger Kevin Cramer by double-digits, but that was also the case in 2012 when she went on to ultimate victory.

The Tribune praises Ms. Heitkamp for her persistence: "It's a reflection of her determination that she came back, and it's why people aren't counting her out this year."

"While a Democrat, she's not afraid to work across the aisle to reach compromises."

While praising Ms. Heitkamp's political flexibility, they criticize Rep. Cramer's unqualified support for President Trump, particularly in health care and the trade war.

The editors conclude: "Cramer gives us no reason to believe he will put the needs of North Dakota over his loyalty to the president...Heitkamp has made it clear...that she does...for that reason, the Tribune editorial board is endorsing Heitkamp for a second term."
