BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) — The prosecutor for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa says he has charged a man in connection with a fatal shooting on the northern North Dakota reservation.

Tribal prosecutor Bill Marcellais tells the Grand Forks Herald 31-year-old Justin Keplin faces reckless endangerment and assault charges in the Nov. 27 death of 29-year-old Joel Sherman.

It was not immediately clear if Keplin had an attorney. He remains in custody pending a bond hearing later this week.

Sherman was found dead in a Belcourt home, prompting lockdowns and shutdowns at area schools, businesses and a hospital. Authorities have not released details of the shooting.

Federal officials are investigating to determine if more serious federal charges are warranted.
