The school year has not officially started and students, parents, and educators are hearing about a serious threat made locally.

KFYR-TV is reporting the arrest of a 20-year-old Mandan man who is accused of wanting to shoot up the school on the first day of classes from summer break.

Eric Erhart told his mother he was planning a school shooting on the first day of school because of the breakup with his girlfriend. His mother called Mandan police because she was worried he would carry out the threat.

Upon interviewing Erhart, Mandan police reported he indicated he wanted to be the next Columbine.

Erhart was unsure if he was going to carry out the threat, but he did admit to officers he did indeed make the threats. He did not mention a particular school in Bismarck or Mandan where he wanted to carry out his threats on.

He was charged with terrorizing, his bond was set and was ordered not to contact with the victim.

With the start of the school year weeks away, and when you hear stories like this, it makes you realize the Bismarck-Mandan area are not immune to stories we hear and see on the national news.
