The North Dakota State Spelling Bee takes place on Monday in Bismarck and one student will get the chance to compete at the national level in Washington D.C.

Each year, hundreds of students arrive in the nation’s capitol to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee which is televised on the ESPN family of networks usually in late May or early June.

This year’s Spelling Bee finals will be on June 3rd.

Various states and counties have different rules for declaring champions but in North Dakota, only one student is sent to Washington D.C. to compete. A maximum of two students from each county are sent to compete at the State Bee.

On Monday, March 20th, the Ramkota Hotel in Bismarck will host 96 students who will go head-to-head for a chance to go to Washington D.C. There is a written session in the morning and then the oral competition later in the afternoon for finalists.

The two students from Burleigh County who will compete are:

  • Amelie Johnson | 7th Grade | Bismarck-Mandan Area Home Educators
  • Pacey Kutzer | 6th Grade | Simle Middle School

The two students from Morton County are:

  • Tymber Boldt | 8th Grade | Flasher Public School
  • Taylor Weil | 6th Grade | Mandan Middle School

Last year, North Dakota’s representative in the Scripps National Spelling Bee was Chloe Carlson, then a 7th grader at Erik Ramstad Middle School in Minot. Townsquare Media invited her to our studio last year for a Spelling Bee of our own.

Carlson is once again one of the representatives from Ward County who will compete in the North Dakota State Spelling Bee on Monday and will have another opportunity to try and secure a spot in Washington D.C.
