First responders in North Dakota took the time Tuesday to honor their comrades on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.West Dakota Fox reported a group of of police, fire fighters and EMT, along with other citizens, took part in a "memorial climb" at the Bismarck State Capitol building.

The participants climbed the capitol stairs to the top to commemorate the efforts of their compatriots in new York and Washington, DC seventeen years ago following the attacks.

The money from registration benefits the Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Since they started making the climb four years ago, they've raised more than $25,000.

"Just to walk it and think about what they were thinking and going through," said one participant, a Carrington firefighter.  "It's a big thought, it keeps you going, it's a lot of work and you carry a lot of weight and you're doing it as a memory.

"First responders from all over the state going up the Capitol stairs in honor of the lives lost in 911. They're going up with their entire gear, and I’m not even wearing half of it."

The responders made the seventeen-story climb six and a half times, to commemorate the 110-story climb rescue workers made in the Twin Towers.
