FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police are investigating whether a Fargo-Moorhead TV journalist broke any laws while reporting a story aimed at revealing holes in security at area elementary schools.

Valley News Live reporter Mellaney Moore on Wednesday walked around three schools without permission. News director Ike Walker tells The Forum newspaper and KFGO radio that the story raises significant questions about school security — and the station stands by the story.

Walker tells The Forum that his station was not aware of laws restricting access to schools. In Fargo and West Fargo, city ordinances require visitors to register with the main office. In Moorhead, Minnesota law essentially demands the same of school visitors. Violations are a misdemeanor.

Some area school officials say the news report showed poor judgment and a disregard for rules.
