In the governor's race and a major farming referendum, North Dakota primary voters turned aside the Republican status quo.

KX News reports former Microsoft executive Doug Burgum on Tuesday defeated Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, the endorsed candidate of the state's GOP convention, to clinch the Republican nomination for governor. Burgum will face Democrat Marvin nelson in November.

Voters also rejected the Legislature's move to loosen the state's Depression-era rules prohibiting corporate farming. Supporters of the so-called ham-and-cheese law had said it would revitalize dairy and swine farms after years of decline.
