A North Dakota woman has become the state's first resident to test positive for the Zika virus.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the woman had traveled to Puerto Rico while pregnant. The North Dakota Department of Health plans to monitor her infant for a year, as the disease can spread to a fetus. No birth defects have been identified in the infant so far.

The department recommends that people who have traveled to Zika-affected areas take precautions when having sex, avoid mosquito bites and see a doctor if they feel ill.
