Summer vacation is here and sometimes you want to get off the beaten path and discover something different. We have a place that is close to home.

Cheapism.com recently released the 15 weird and abandon places to visit this summer and one of those places is located in North Dakota.

The site that made the list in NoDak is Stanley Mickelsen Safeguard Complex located in Nekoma. Back during the cold war between the two powers of the United States and Russia, nuclear war always a fear. This site was the counties first anti ballistic missile defense system to safeguard the county against attack from any other county. This site was shut down not long after it opened in 1975.

The site is not opened to the public but still stands behind a guarded fence and is visible from the road. It is located near Grand Forks.
