The senator described her mother as "the rock of our family," in a statement.

Mrs. Heitkamp's son Joel, host of radio's News and Views (heard daily on SuperTalk 1270) honored his late mother on his blog:

"She taught us to never fear being in the minority if we believed we were right. I loved that about my mother.

"Doreen LaVonne Berg Heitkamp was a woman before her time."

Mr. Heitkamp hailed his mother as a progressive-minded individual who expected her daughters to excel.

The family says she will be laid to rest in her hometown of Mantador.
