Mandan Public Schools and St Mary's started classed this week. Bismarck Public Schools start after Labor Day. A new study out says students need more sleep and one solution is to start the school day after 8AM.

According to NBC News, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the answer to the problem is to start the school day after 8AM, best at 830 AM. Too many students are sleep deprived between getting to and from school, home work and after school extra curricular activities and sports, students are lucky if they get 7 hours of sleep. The AAP recommend 8 hours of rest each night.

According to the report-

"it's clear that adolescents who get enough sleep have a reduced risk of being overweight or suffering depression, are less likely to be involved in automobile accidents, and have better grades, higher standardized test scores and an overall better quality of life,” says Dr. Judith Owens, director of sleep medicine at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, who led the team that wrote the group’s policy statement on the issue.

I'm sure you will not be hard pressed to find a student that would like more snooze time and a later start to the school day.
