We dread that monthly bill each month. The electricity or gas bill at the end of the month. Depending on the season and where you live will depend on how many green-backs you will be set back to pay that bill.

During the summer, the electricity bill costs more for most people because of the cooling of the air conditioner. The same effect in the winter with the gas bill.

WalletHub compared the total monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, examining consumption rates and prices of four energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.

Some of the cheapest states for energy costs include

  • Louisiana
  • California
  • Florida
  • Arizona
  • Oregon

The most expensive states include

  • North Dakota (#6)
  • Massachusetts
  • Wyoming
  • Connecticut (#1)
