“Winter” Storm Closes I-90 in Western SD

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota officials have closed Interstate 90 from Sturgis to the Wyoming border because of the early autumn blizzard hitting the western part of the state.

Officials say that section of the interstate will remain closed until storm conditions improve and crews are able to clear the roadway.

The state Transportation Department is recommending no travel on some other western South Dakota roads.

The National Weather Service says up to two feet of snow is expected across the Black Hills, with winds gusting to 70 mph. Up to three feet is possible in the northern Black Hills. Parts of the plains in western South Dakota could get up to a foot.

Steve Trimarchi of the National Weather Service says such snows are particularly unusual this early on the plains.
