Students who attend public school in Bismarck will find themselves in the classroom earlier this year, but will also find their summer starting earlier.

The Bismarck School Board approved the 2016-17 calendar on 11/9. The school year for Bismarck will start on August 25th, 2016 with the final day May 25th, 2017

The new calendar was adopted after 2 difference calendars were sent out to more than 2,000 parents and teachers in an online survey. The consensus from the survey is that nobody wanted to be in school through both the Labor Day and Memorial Day holidays, but nobody wanted to extend the school year later into the summer.

The final calendar was the one selected by more than 75% of respondents in the survey. The School Board approved the calendar during their business meeting 11/9.

The new calendar also transitions to shorter vacations for mid-winter and spring break, opting for 4 day weekends instead of the traditional week off. Winter break will still be a little more than a week, with students out of school on Dec. 23rd and returning Jan. 3rd.
