Commission OKs ‘Little House’ In Cathedral DIstrict
Anne Cleary will get her house in Bismarck's Cathedral District.
The Tribune reports the Bismarck City Commission voted unanimously this week to allow Ms. Cleary to build a small home on her lot along Mandan Street.
In doing so they reversed a decision earlier this month by the Board of Adjustment. Ms. Cleary had requested a variance to build a house on her 50-by-50 foot lot at 717 N. Mandan St. The board had turned down the request based on the size of the lot.
Some reisdents in the neighborhood has opposed the request, expressing concerns over aesthetics. Proponents had touted the potential economic benefits to the community.
City Commissioner Steve Marquardt made the motion to overturn the denial Tuesday.
"The requested variance is the minimum variance that would accomplish the relief sought by the applicant," he said.
One local opponent said she felt like "the interests of developers are being prioritized" over "a sense of neighborhood."
Ms. Cleary said she was happy with the move. She is in the process of determining a timeline for the house's construction.
