A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the formal opening of the FBI Billings Field Office, which has become the 56th FBI field office in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The new office has been established to take over investigative responsibilities that were previously overseen by the Salt Lake City Field Office.

The expansion has been described by federal and state officials as a significant shift in how crime is addressed in Montana. The FBI has reported a substantial increase in investigations in the state over the past five years, prompting the decision to place a full field office in Billings.

The FBI noted that the office will operate in addition to eight resident agencies already located throughout Montana, including those in Bozeman, Glasgow, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell, Missoula, Shelby, and Havre.

The expanded presence has been linked to ongoing concerns about violent crime, homicide, child abuse, drug trafficking, human trafficking, public corruption, and financial crimes.

Officials at the event emphasized that the new field office is expected to increase coordination among prosecutors and law enforcement agencies statewide.

Federal authorities said the additional resources and staffing will support long-term investigations, counter drug distribution networks, and reinforce partnerships aimed at addressing Montana’s highest-impact criminal threats.
