Williston Group Takes on Big Project to Restore Historic Locomotive 3059
There are some pieces of Williston history that are hard to miss. One of them has been sitting in Railroad Park for decades, quietly reminding generations of the area's railroad roots.
Now, a local group wants to give that piece of history a major facelift.
The Fort Buford 6th Infantry Association has presented a proposal to the Williston Parks & Recreation District to cosmetically restore Great Northern Steam Locomotive 3059. The goal is to have the project completed in time for a grand rededication during the Chokecherry Festival weekend in August 2028, marking the locomotive's 70th anniversary in Williston.
A Piece of Railroad History
Locomotive 3059 was built in 1913 and is a 2 8 2 Mikado type freight locomotive. It is the only surviving example of Great Northern's O 1 Class.
After decades of service, the locomotive was retired and presented to the Williston Park Board by Great Northern President John M. Budd on August 2, 1958.
After years outside, exposure to the elements has taken its toll. The proposed restoration would address the exterior while preserving the locomotive's historic character.
Safety is also a major part of the plan. Before volunteers begin any physical work, certified environmental contractors would handle lead paint and asbestos abatement and ensure the area is safe.
Restoring More Than a Locomotive
Once the site is cleared, the restoration would take place in several phases. Some historic components would be moved off site for cleaning and repairs, while replacement boiler panels would be fabricated before being installed.
The finished locomotive would receive historically inspired colors, along with a new interpretive sign explaining the history of the locomotive and Williston's connection to the Great Northern Railway.

The association plans to fund the project independently through community donations, grants and sponsorships.
