As summer draws to a close, the air in the Mon-Dak region is buzzing with the anticipation of a new school year. Soon, students, parents, and teachers will be diving back into the familiar routines of early mornings and bustling classrooms.

I can still remember the nervous excitement that accompanied the night before the first day of school. My clothes were meticulously laid out, my backpack packed to the brim with number 2 pencils, a 4-colored pen, and the latest Trapper Keeper. Sleep was elusive as I tossed and turned, wondering what the new year would bring.

The first day of school also held the promise of mom and dad waiting at the table with a special breakfast. My mom would whip up something delicious, a stark contrast to the usual Frosted Flakes, or peanut butter toast that became the morning routine later. Dad was there with a reassuring hand and a promise that things would be okay. That was a comforting start to the endless adventures and challenges ahead.

This year, as families in our region prepare for another school year, it's worth taking a moment to appreciate where we stand in education. Walllethub.com recently released their states with the best and worst school systems for 2024. Montana ranks a respectable 19th out of the 50 states. While the Treasure State may not be at the top, it's certainly not at the bottom. For comparison, North Dakota ranks 10th, while Minnesota comes in at 24th. Out of 50 states, I would say our region scored pretty well.

So, as the countdown to the first day of school continues, let's embrace the excitement and nostalgia that this time of year brings. Whether it's the scent of freshly sharpened pencils or the promise of a proper breakfast, these small traditions make the start of the school year a special time for all.
