If you've spent any time living in North Dakota, you've probably heard someone say, "We've got it pretty good here." It's a phrase I find myself saying often, and a newly released study suggests there may be more truth to it than we realize.

North Dakota Ranks Among America's Least Stressed States

According to new data from Sage Space Technologies, North Dakota ranks as the fourth least stressed and anxious state in the nation. That's certainly something residents can feel good about.

The Dakotas Lead the Way While Regional Neighbors See Different Results

Even more impressive, our neighbors are doing well too. South Dakota claimed the top spot as the least stressed state in America, while Minnesota ranked second. Montana came in at 39th, showing a much higher percentage of adults reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression than the Dakotas.

It's Worse In Louisiana

On the other end of the rankings, Louisiana was named the "saddest" state in America, with the highest percentage of adults reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression.

While no place is completely free from stress, North Dakota's strong showing may not come as much of a surprise to those who call the state home.

Many people point to the state's slower pace of life, close-knit communities, and abundant outdoor recreation as reasons why life here feels a little less overwhelming. Whether it's spending time fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, or simply enjoying a quiet evening under a wide-open prairie sky, there are countless opportunities to step away from the pressures of everyday life.

North Dakotans also tend to look out for one another. In many communities, neighbors still know each other by name, volunteerism remains strong, and people are often willing to lend a helping hand when someone needs it. That sense of community can make a meaningful difference when it comes to mental well-being.

The rankings were based on data from the National Center for Health Statistics using the U.S. Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey. Researchers analyzed 72 separate survey periods covering more than four years, from April 23, 2020, through September 16, 2024.

For each state, researchers calculated the average percentage of adults reporting symptoms consistent with an anxiety disorder or depressive disorder. States were then ranked from the highest average percentage to the lowest. Researchers also compared each state's results to the national average to determine how far above or below the norm they fell.

Of course, these rankings don't mean that North Dakotans never experience anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges. Those struggles affect people everywhere, and anyone experiencing persistent symptoms should seek help from a healthcare professional or mental health provider.

Still, it's encouraging to see North Dakota recognized as one of the least stressed states in the country. It's another reminder that while winters may be long and the wind may occasionally test our patience, there's something special about living in a place where friendly neighbors, open spaces, and a strong sense of community continue to make everyday life a little easier.
