Northland Health Centers is encouraging residents across the region to take a closer look at their breast health by learning more about risk factors and the importance of early detection. As part of a nationwide awareness campaign, the community health organization is reminding individuals that education, preventive care, and regular screenings can make a significant difference.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women in the United States. In North Dakota, about one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point during their lifetime. While researchers continue to study the exact causes of the disease, several known factors can increase a person’s risk.

Understanding Breast Cancer Risk Factors and Ways to Reduce Your Risk

Some of the most common risk factors include being female, being over the age of 50, having a personal or family history of breast cancer, or inheriting genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. Other factors that may contribute to increased risk include receiving chest radiation before age 30, long-term use of combined hormone replacement therapy, dense breast tissue, being overweight after menopause, and alcohol consumption.

However, healthcare experts emphasize that breast cancer does not always follow a predictable pattern. Many individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors beyond age and gender. Breast cancer can also occur in women younger than 50 and, although much less common, men can develop the disease as well.

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, certain lifestyle choices may help reduce the likelihood of developing the disease. Health professionals often recommend limiting alcohol intake, avoiding tobacco products, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, and eating a balanced diet. It is also important for patients to discuss hormone therapy options with their healthcare provider to better understand potential risks.

Early Detection and Regular Mammograms Can Save Lives

One of the most powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer is early detection through regular screening. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early and remains localized, the five-year relative survival rate is approximately 99 percent. Mammograms play a critical role in identifying breast cancer at its earliest stages, often before symptoms appear.

“In our rural communities, access to preventive care is essential,” said Caitlin Olson, PA-C of Northland Health Centers. “We want our patients to know that they don’t have to wait until something feels wrong to come see us. Regular screenings, conversations about family history, and simple lifestyle changes can make a real difference. We’re here to walk alongside our patients every step of the way.”
