Growing up in North Dakota, you may have noticed our grandparents and parents have a few catch phrases. To share some of these with the rest of the world, I've put together a list of five phrases you commonly hear from North Dakota parents and grandparents.

5 Phrases Every North Dakota Parent/Grandparent Has Said

1. Well, that's a good deal.

North Dakotans love a good deal. Why spend money that you don't have to? If there's a good deal at a store in town, we're going to say it. We'll also tell every close relative, neighbor, and person that we run into on the street. We don't gatekeep.

2. Oh, it's just a little snow.

North Dakota grandparents will never let you one-up them when it comes to snow. They will tell you about walking through blizzards, and the roads turning into snow tunnels back in their day.

They don't think school should ever be cancelled either. They suffered, so we must suffer too.

3. Say hi to your folks there for me.

We're a friendly bunch. We like to wave and chat and be friendly. We didn't get the name "North Dakota Nice" for nothing.

The thing about North Dakota is that everybody knows everybody. Wherever you go, someone will know your mom and dad. They will want you to say "Hi". You mist deliver the message or you will get seven years bad luck.

4. You can't park there, bud.

No one knows how to park in the winter in North Dakota. You can't see the lines, so you will hear people say "You can't park there, bud" quite often.

This phrase has also evolved into a sort of dad joke. Every time a North Dakota parent sees someone wiped in with their car in a ditch, they can't help themselves; they have to holler, "You can't park there, bud," as if the person wanted to in the first place.

5. If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes.

Every North Dakota grandparent has said this to their griping and moaning grandchildren when they complain about the cold.

It's true, North Dakota weather is ridiculously unpredictable. You never know what you're going to get.
