We are already getting into those summer temps and hitting the river.

Before you get too carried away, there are a few things you should know.

You don't want to get out on the Missouri River, start having fun, only to have it all come to a screeching halt because you've been pulled over.

Some of the rules are obvious, while others might be things you'd never think of, especially if you are a first-time boater or new to the river scene.

No Life Jackets & Other Safety Equipment

It's a law that on every boat, you must have a life jacket for every person on board. Kids ten and under MUST wear one.

Beyond lifejackets, you will need to have a fire extinguisher on board, a sound-producing device like a whistle or horn, and a throwable flotation device. This, according to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

Drinking While Driving

If you are driving a boat while under the influence of alcohol or other substances, you will get a BUI (Boating Under the Influence). This violation could lead to fines, jail time, and suspension of your license.

This one is pretty obvious, but just in case, now you officially know.

Improper Navigation Lights

If you are driving at night, you better make sure you have the red/green navigation lights.

Texting

Did you know you can get pulled over on your boat and get a ticket for texting while driving? Yep, just like in a car, you can get in trouble for this. I haven't heard of anyone getting ticketed for this in North Dakota, but it is possible.

Improper Display of Registration Numbers

I'm sure you know that all motorized boats have to be registered with the state, but a common mistake comes with how you display your registration numbers.

According to the source, your registration numbers must be displayed on both sides of the bow in contrasting colors, and they must be at least three inches in height.

These are just some of the most common reasons you can get ticketed on North Dakota's Missouri River this summer, but there are several other ways you can get in trouble.

Stay safe, and read up on the rules of the river before you get out on the water.
