Outdoor lovers know that North Dakota's cold months are some of the best for ice fishing. According to a recent ranking by Fish USA, North Dakota is one of the top ice fishing states in the U.S.

Now, North Dakota doesn't get quite as much recognition as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," but anglers know that places like Devils Lake and Lake Sakakawea are some of the best spots for Walleye, jumbo perch, and pike. And the best time to get out on the ice? -The source says mid-winter, January through February, typically offers the most reliable ice and best chances for a big fish.
Fish USA's shout-out should make you proud. North Dakota might not be the first name you think of when you imagine iconic fishing states, but according to the experts, it definitely is.
Personally, I've never been ice fishing. Remember that scene from Titanic where Jack talks about going ice fishing in Wisconsin? He says he fell through the ice, and it felt like a thousand knives stabbing you at the same time.
That stuck with me and sort of kept me away from the sport, but now I think I need to bundle up and add this to my North Dakota bucket list.
