Holiday potluck season is upon us. Within the next two months, you will undoubtedly be roped into a couple of office potlucks. While potlucks can be exciting, fun, and delicious, there are a few rules North Dakotans should follow, so these potlucks don't turn into a disaster.

1. Secret Family Recipes

Don't show up to an office holiday party with a dish that is a "secret family recipe"; if you can't tell me exactly what's in it, I don't want it. Leave it at home. Mystery foods/ingredients are not allowed.

2. Assembly Required

Walking through the potluck line should be simple. You should be able to easily grab or scoop the food with one hand and hold the plate in the other. If your food requires too much work and will hold up the line, consider bringing something else.

3. Crockpot Chaos

You need to collaborate ahead of time before you just show up with a crockpot. There are only so many plugs in the breakroom. To avoid disaster, figure out who is bringing one.

4. Labels

If I can't easily identify what your dish is by looking at it, well, that's sus, but it is always nice to have labels on each dish, so you know exactly what you're getting into.

5. Sign-Up Skipper

If you didn't sign up to bring any food and didn't contribute to the office potluck, well, poo on you. That said, if you genuinely forgot and still want to bring something, you can always bring plates or napkins. Even if someone else also brings some, it's always nice to have those stocked in the breakroom for later use.

6. Get Rid Of It

Last but not least, we have the most important rule. For the love of God, TAKE YOUR FOOD HOME. I've seen this too many times. People leave their food in the fridge so others can pick at it over the next couple of days. That's a nice thing to do, yes, but a week later, if your food is still in there, you're the worst. Clear your food out of the fridge, and take your dishes home; nobody wants to clean it out for you, or smell gross old food.

Those are just some of the rules I can think of, but feel free to message us with some of yours. Happy holidays!
