Do We Have A Month Where It Has Never Snowed In North Dakota?
Here we are, close to the halfway mark for the month of April, and I just saw snow in the forecast once again for North Dakota.
Now, snow in April for North Dakota is certainly not uncommon. We have had some memorable snow events during this month, most recently the winter of 2022 and 2023, when the city of Bismarck received 100 inches of snow.
We had several April snowstorms that year, which almost set a record for the city of Bismarck.
Before you start to panic. We do not have an April snowstorm in the forecast for us right now, but snow is mentioned for next week, according to the National Weather Service.
A pretty powerful cold front will hit the state sometime Sunday into Monday, which will send temps crashing after a warm weekend that could bring us a few flakes Sunday evening or early Monday morning. Again, nothing to worry about.
That got me thinking: what months have we not recorded snowfall in the state of North Dakota?
Do we have a month where it has never snowed in North Dakota?
My first thought was July, right? Usually, our warmest month of the year. There's no way we have had snow if July before. WRONG!
I do remember fairly recently, that snow happened in the northern part of the state in June.
August is probably our second warmest month. Has it ever snowed in North Dakota in August before?
Ding, Ding, Ding...That would be the correct answer. According to Wikipedia, it has snowed in North Dakota during every month except AUGUST.
I spoke to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, and a representative told me that in the two-thirds of the state that they are in charge of (The NWS in Grand Forks has the other third), we have never had snow in both the months of July and August.
Now you know. Snow is possible in just about every month in North Dakota, and it's not unheard of for April and even May.
