New Bismarck Riverfront Area Could Eliminate A Boat Ramp

A proposed riverfront recreational area could spell the end for a popular boat ramp in Bismarck.

I ran across this post on Facebook from a longtime Bismarck resident and fishing guide Mike Peluso.  Apparently, there are concerns that a new Riverfront Festival Grounds would allegedly mean removing the boat ramp at Keelboat Park.

Keelboat Park is located on Riverboat Road just south of the I-94 bridge.  The boat landing there is a popular boat ramp, that is actually out of the current and offers an alternative to launching at the often crowded Fox Island boat ramp.

There will be a series of community sessions concerning the Riverfront Festival Ground coming up next week.

They will take place next Wednesday, March 13th at Bismarck Gateway to Science, at the North Dakota State Heritage Center on Thursday, March 14th from 5:30-7:30 pm, and Monday, March 18th from 11 am to 1 pm at the Huckleberry House.

Opponents of this development are also concerned about potential north/south traffic flow problems and lack of parking areas in the proposed area.

I think we are all in agreement that an outdoor amphitheater and festival area is certainly something we all want in Bismarck.

The question, "Is this the right location for this project?"

You check out the proposed area for the amphitheater here. The computer-generated photos are something.  The amphitheater would be located just southwest of the MDU Resources Community Bowl.  It would seat from 3,000 to 4,000 people.

The proposed location would have a beautiful backdrop for sure.  The Missouri River and historic railroad bridge would be front and center but a lot of questions remain.

If you have ever been to Bluestem Amphitheater in Moorhead, Minnesota before you know what a draw that is.  Something I feel the city of Bismarck desperately needs is a concert venue like this, but is this the right location?  I guess that's why concerned citizens should attend one of these meetings and voice their concerns if so desired.
