Currently, this is North Dakota's most stunning tree without a doubt.

I'm talking about the Prairifire Crabapple tree.  The tree is certainly appropriately named because it is LIT up like no other tree in the state this time of year for a few weeks each May.

Prairifire Crabapple trees are a very popular tree with residents in Bismarck, Mandan, and Lincoln.  Numerous homeowners have their berms and yards decorated with these beautiful trees.

The Prairifire Crabapple tree is a small ornamental tree which makes it appealing to homeowners who have limited space in their yards.  The tree is also relatively hardy to handle our North Dakota winters and is resistant to diseases that seem to plague other types of crabapple trees.

The Prairifire Crabapple tree also has other benefits that it will add to your residence.

This tree as I mentioned earlier is one of the first trees to bloom each spring.  I have two of these trees in my yard and I can also tell you that, unlike other trees such as Cottonwoods, it will not leave your yard a mess.

Not only is this crab tree great in tight spaces it will also attract wildlife to your yard.

I've found this plant has very persistent fruit (small berries) that attracts birds.  Unlike other trees with fruit, it doesn't drop to the ground very easily.  It just dries up and remains on the tree most of the time.  Which means no cleanup.  It provides a nice food source for your favorite feathered friends (even in the winter).

Here's what you can expect from the Prairifire Crabapple tree if you should plant one.

Height: It will grow 15 to 20 feet.

Bloom Time: May in North Dakota (lasts about 3 weeks).

Flower Color: Hot Pink to Magenta that will light up your yard (especially on sunny days).

Mature Leaf Color: Dark Green.

New Leaf Color: Burgundy.

Fall Color: Bronze.

Berry: Persistent and Red.
