Once upon a time a Minnesota 'skyscraper' was one of the tallest in the world, but like all things in life time marches on, and things change. The IDS Center building in downtown Minneapolis was the 16th tallest building in the world back in 1973, now the 16th tallest building in the world is in St. Petersburg Russia.

According to the AI behind ChatGPT:

The IDS Center was constructed in the late 1960s and was completed in 1972. It was designed by the renowned architect Philip Johnson and his firm, Johnson/Burgee Architects. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in Minneapolis and remained so until the construction of the Capella Tower (originally known as First Bank Place) in 1992.

The IDS Center is named after Integrated Design Services, which was the name of the holding company of its primary tenant, Investors Diversified Services, Inc. at the time that the building opened.

Another fun fact regarding the IDS Center building, it housed the headquarters of Dayton Hudson Corporation from 1972 to 2001.

Growing up a stone's throw from Downtown Minneapolis, I was always in awe of that tower of gleaming glass that rose up from what appeared to be the middle of the city. My dad worked in a nearby building, so when I was lucky enough to see my dad at work in downtown Minneapolis, I knew we were close to his building when I couldn't see the top of the IDS Center through the car windows anymore.

Were you ever in awe of a building growing up?
