With the Missouri River already melting to the point the boating season can start, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department are asking anglers to remove their ice houses from lakes before the ice thins too far.

The unexpectedly warm winter has lead to an acceleration of the ice thinning on lakes all over North Dakota, especially those in the South and West. While the deadline is still March 15 for removal of all ice houses from lakes, Game and Fish are worried that by that date, the ice will be too thin on most of the lakes for retrieval.

Just last week, a Mandan couple, trying to retrieve their ice house, broke through the ice on Logan County Lake and had to wait hours for help to break them free.

Game and Fish urge anglers to keep safety in mind when venturing out onto any lake, and please retrieve ice houses before it gets too dangerous.
