As the North Dakota State Fair winds down at the Fairgrounds in Minot, the attendance numbers are slightly down from 2017 in the first week of operation.

Saturday is the final day of the annual nine-day festival of food, music and fun. We know the state fair is not the largest in the country. I've been to many state fairs and there are much larger fairs, but there is something very special about our state fair.

It's friendly, it's fun and it's not too large. In one afternoon, you can get to see all of the things you want to see and ride, plus take in a concert to top off the evening. And it's not like the fair changes every year, it is pretty much the same. Year after year, you know exactly where to walk to get the best corndogs or fresh chocolate chip cookies. They're always at the same spot.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, attendance through Wednesday had the numbers slightly behind from a year ago. To break it down, the fair is averaging about 33,000 visitors a day in the first week of the celebration. As of Wednesday, the total walk through at the gates were at 197,972.

Nickelback wraps up the fair Saturday night.

The fair saw record crowds in 2010 and 2012-2015. The fair was canceled in 2011 due the flood.

Fun, food and music, it's all the North Dakota State Fair.
