It's finally and officially garage sale season in North Dakota! It's quite the thrill going through tables of odds and ends, trying to find some treasure.

That said, there are a few things I'd avoid purchasing.

1. Makeup

I know how tempting this can be, but do not, I repeat, do not buy makeup from a garage sale. This is one of those things that just grosses me out a bit. You don't know how old it is, or how it was kept. Just don't do it.

2. Shoes

I've never seen a pair of shoes at a rummage sale that screamed "Take me home with you." Typically, shoes for sale are dingy, and stinky. Stay away, far away.

3. Mattresses

I caution everyone away from buying used mattresses on Facebook and at yard sales. Here's the thing: Bed bugs. Pee stains. Other weird smells. It's a no for me.

I understand you may be financially strapped, and a new mattress just isn't in the cards. At the very least try to get one off of one of your family members, so if you're sleeping in anyone's sweat/bodily fluids, it's someone you know.

4. Bathing Suits

I hate to steer anyone away from a good bargain, but this makes me cringe. If you must buy the swimsuit, opt to only get the top. Sharing bottoms with strangers is far from acceptable.

5. Appliances

Rule of thumb: If they don't want it, it probably doesn't work. While it might seem like a steal to buy that iron or microwave, it's more than likely junk.

That's It!

Look, if you feel comfortable buying any of the things I mentioned, you go for it. Who am I to stand in the way of your happiness and savings? Happy hunting!
