Six Ranked Teams Lose — Week 6 College Football Recap
A half-dozen teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 -- including two in the top 10 -- lost in a wild weekend of college football. Here's a recap of the most interesting games:
Oklahoma Got Upset by Iowa State
Walk-on quarterback Kyle Kempt passed for 343 yards and three scores, and Iowa State stunned No. 3 Oklahoma, 38-13, in Norman on Saturday. The loss snapped a 14-game win streak for the Sooners and could cost them a shot at the national title.
After leading 24-10 in the second quarter, Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) gave up 21 straight points to the Cyclones. Kempt stepped in for starter Jacob Park, who went on a medical leave earlier this week. Linebacker Joel Lanning also played under center for Iowa State (3-2, 1-1). He had 35 yards rushing and 25 passing, as well as eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
Baker Mayfield threw for 306 yards for the Sooners, who lost to Iowa State for the first time since 1990. Mayfield's play won't cost him Heisman votes, but his team's loss may hurt. Oklahoma has games against Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU and West Virginia left on the schedule.
Michigan Lost to Michigan State (Again)
Brian Lewerke ran for one touchdown and threw for another, and Michigan State upset No. 7 Michigan, 14-10, in rainy Ann Arbor on Saturday night. The victory gave the Spartans a win over their in-state rivals for the eighth time in 10 years.
Michigan (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) had a chance to win, but quarterback John O'Korn, who started in place of the injured Wilton Speight, could not connect with any receivers on his final throw into the end zone from the MSU 37. O'Korn threw three interceptions in the game.
Michigan State (4-1, 2-0) landed at No. 21 in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll as a result of the win.
Miami Finally Beat Florida State
Malik Rosier threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Langham with 6 seconds to play, and the thirteenth-ranked Miami Hurricanes beat Florida State, 24-20, in Tallahassee on Saturday. The victory snapped the Seminoles seven-game win streak over their in-state rivals.
The first three quarters of the game, which was postponed from Sept. 16 because of Hurricane Irma, featured little scoring, ending with Miami (4-0, 2-0 ACC) ahead 10-3. However, the final 15 minutes saw four lead changes with the Hurricanes storming back after James Blackman threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Auden Tate to give Florida State (1-3, 1-2) the lead with 1:24 to play.
Rosier then rallied the Hurricanes, driving 75 yards on nine plays and providing another fantastic finish in the lore of this competitive series.
Kenny Hill Did it All for TCU
Kenny Hill ran for the game-winning touchdown, threw for another score and caught another TD, and eighth-ranked TCU edged No. 23 West Virginia, 31-24, in Texas on Saturday. With the win and the loss by Oklahoma, the Horned Frogs remained the Big 12's only undefeated team (5-0, 2-0).
Will Grier threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns for the Mountaineers (3-2, 1-1), including two of 60-plus yards in the third quarter. Mountaineers receiver David Sills V had seven catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
Hill led his team to the win, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:53 left. He threw a 45-yard TD pass and caught a 48-yard scoring strike from KaVontae Turpin for a score, too. Hill hasn't put up impressive enough numbers to hop into the Heisman race yet, but there is a half-season left to play.
Stanford's (Bryce) Love Train Rolled over Utah
Bryce Love ran for 152 yards and a touchdown, and Stanford knocked off No. 20 Utah, 23-20, in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. The loss was the first of the season for the Utes (4-1, 1-1 Pac 12), who dropped from the AP Top 25 rankings because of the defeat.
Held under 100 yards through three quarters, Love ripped off a 68-yard touchdown run with 12:02 left that gave the Cardinal the lead for good. The win vaulted Stanford (4-2, 3-1) back into the Top 25 and gave Love a chance to gain ground on Penn State's Saquon Barkley and Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield in the Heisman Trophy race.
Both Stanford and Utah have only once conference loss, putting them in the mix for the Pac-12 title. All the conference's teams are chasing No. 5 Washington and No. 8 Washington State, neither of which have a loss yet this season.
