Texas blues-rocker Johnny Winter, who played a concert recently in Bismarck, is dead at 70.

Rolling Stone reports the guitarist was on tour in Europe at the time and died in Zurich, Switzerland.

Winter was born in Beaumont, Texas and rose to prominence in the late 60s and early 70s.  The albino singer cut a striking figure onstage with his stark white hair.  His brother Edgar Winter was a star in his own right.

Johnny Winter was known for his stinging guitar work and production skills; an album he produced for blues legend Muddy Waters won three Grammys.  Winter also played at the original Woodstock festival in 1969.
