U.S. Takes Women’s World Cup
Once again, The United States women are the champions of World Cup soccer, shutting out the Netherlands 2-0 to win its fourth World Cup title and second championship in a row.
Deadline.com reports American Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle scored goals in the second half to lead the U.S. to victory. Ms. Rapinoe put the U.S. on the board with a penalty kick in the 61st minute.
Controversy and ill will marked the Americans' run for the Cup this year. Fans of opposing teams lambasted the team for poor sportsmanship, and Ms. Rapinoe drew criticism back home for suggesting the team may reject an invitation to the White House.
It remains to be seen whether the Trump administration will extend that invitation.
As the Sports Illustrated web page reported, Co-Captain Rapinoe captured the Golden Boot (top scorer) and Golden Ball (best player in the competition) after the team clinched the championship.
