Did North Dakota Get it Right with Its Pick for ‘Favorite 90s Movie’?
The 1990s brought us several great movies. It may have been the last decade before all the overdone reboots and sequels began reusing every creative idea ever thought of. And now we know what North Dakota's favorite 90s movie was.
Frontier Bundles did the homework to find what 90s movies were the favorite of every state in the U.S. The favorite movies from each state are likely to be movies that everyone in the family will love. These are movies with stories that people of almost all ages can relate to, or at least the majority of the movies that were listed for each state.
Disney featured several films on the list. And why wouldn't they? Each Disney film on the list was more than worthy of making it. The 90s brought us one of the most universally beloved Disney movies of all time with 'The Lion King.' If you haven't recreated the scene where Rafiki holds up Simba with your own pet, what are you doing with your life? Eight states picked this as their favorite 90s movie, but none were North Dakota.
California picked 'Aladdin' and Delaware went with 'Toy Story 2.' These are both solid picks from that era, but North Dakota's favorite is 'Beauty and the Beast.' The animated film was a solid pick as it earned two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. The movie has also aged well with its live-action version, starring Emma Watson, becoming the highest-grossing PG-rated film in history. We could've done a lot worse.
As for non-Disney movies making the list of some states' favorites in the 90s, there were others such as:
- 'Forrest Gump' - Undeniably a great movie and when you have Tom Hanks playing the titular role, you can't ask for anything better.
- 'Terminator 2' - Maybe it wasn't the most family friendly as I eluded to earlier, but one of the greatest sequels in cinematic history.
- 'Titanic' - Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet made for on-screen magic even though I still thought there was room on that floating broken door at the end (spoiler alert) for Leo to jump up there and survive.
- 'Home Alone' - Great Christmas movie! Also, does anyone know what Kevin McCallister's dad does for a living? His Chicago house is amazing and he buys pizza for about 30 people at the beginning with what he had in his pocket. Did he own a ficticious version of Apple in the movie or something?
- 'Saving Private Ryan' - Amazing all-star cast, but once again, Tom Hanks ftw.
- 'Ghost' - Thanks to that scene with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, there may have been a time in the 90s when pottery was sexy.
- 'Armageddon' - How did this become any state's favorite? I don't trust 90s Ben Affleck trying to save the world from anything, let alone an asteroid the size of Texas.
- 'Independence Day' - In contrast to Armageddon, I'll trust my life with Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman in their attempts to save the world before I'll ever trust 90s Ben Affleck.
A few others made the list, including 'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace,' but I need a full novel to talk about how even Liam Neeson couldn't save that film. You can check out all the other states' picks for their favorite from the 90s here.
What do you think, North Dakota? Did this list get it right?
