The Mandan Police Department's new "anonymous tip" app is facing some resistance.

West Dakota Fox TV reports the Mandan PD has issued a new smartphone app designed to allow "anonymous" crime tips.

Both the Mandan and the Bismarck departments use a version of the Tip 411 program, allowing citizens to anonymously send information, pictures, and videos. It also enables police investigators to communicate back with the tipper for additional information, "all while remaining anonymous."

It's the "anonymous" part that a lot of folks seem to have a problem with.

A number of Mandan residents have commented via social media that they are concerned that their anonymity would not be protected.

Factors cited include potential "hackers" and the difficulty of "keeping secrets" in a relatively small community.

In general however, both the Bismarck and the Mandan departments maintain their respective apps have worked well.

The Mandan PD app is available via the Apple iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Mandan Police Department website.
