Bismarck City Leaders are taking another look at allowing backyard chickens. More on this in a moment.

It's no secret, I'm in favor of this. As someone who prefers less government and more freedom for its citizens, I'm all in.

I currently live in a rural development outside of Bismarck that allows backyard chickens. I myself do not have them, but I have considered getting some. How can you not, with the price of eggs?

I have chickens on just about all sides around my property, including my next-door neighbor's. Not only do they have chickens, they also have ducks.

Speaking of ducks, I used to raise captive-reared ducks in Grand Forks. I was even responsible for the ordinance that was drafted by the city.

Before I tell you the likelihood of backyard chickens being allowed in Bismarck, check out my pet ducks from a few years ago.

In many parts of the United States, raising backyard chickens has become a popular practice for sustainable living.

Now, that sustainable living could be coming to the Capital City. FINALLY! Bismarck County Commissioner John Rich recently brought the idea forward to allow backyard chickens in Bismarck.

The city of Bismarck is drafting an ordinance to set rules to allow chickens within the city limits.

This is according to a new report from our news partner KX News, as heard on our Townsquare Media Radio stations this morning.

You can bet the high cost of eggs and pressure from its citizens is driving this backpedaling by city leaders, as this idea has been discussed several times over the last five years.

Not to mention that Mandan currently allows chickens, and the city of Lincoln has also been kicking it around.

If the ordinance is approved, guidelines will be issued on how many chickens you can own, chicken coop regulations, and other restrictions, like whether or not roosters are allowed.

Keep in mind that if backyard chickens are approved in the city limits of Bismarck, they will be for residential use only. You won't be able to sell your eggs to your neighbors. Legally anyway.

City leaders will continue to gather information before making a final decision. My fingers are crossed for its residents who want another form of sustainable living.
