Have you ever been stung by a ground wasp in North Dakota? I have, and it was one of the most painful moments of my life. First off, it likely won't be a single ground wasp, but numerous. The Yellow Jackets who take over a rodent hole are usually very aggressive and will sting you repeatedly.

My Terrifying Experience

I was mowing my lawn and on my tractor when all of a sudden, I felt excruciating pain on my left calf. I remember it like it was yesterday. I looked down, and numerous yellow jackets were on my calf, stinging away. It felt like I was touching a live electrical wire. I struggled just to stop the mower, and by that time the little SOB's were gone.

After a little investigation, I found the nest, which had taken up residence in a former gopher hole. I drove over the hole while mowing, not knowing there was a wasp nest below, and I paid for it. Thankfully, I didn't have an allergic reaction.

What You Should Do

If you are stung by ground wasps, first off, get away from the nest. Far away. This seems like a no-brainer, but did you know that ground wasps release a chemical alarm that attracts more attackers, according to the University of Illinois? In other words, don't hang around.

Next, according to my doctor at Essential Health, clean the area with warm soap and water to prevent infections. You can also place a cold pack or ice in a bag on the sting for 10 to 20 minutes to reduce swelling and pain. Keeping the area that was stung elevated may help. Avoid scratching the area to prevent skin infections.

According to City MD, you can take over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to manage discomfort. You can also try an oral antihistamine or apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to ease itching and swelling.

When to Seek Medical Attention

A sting from a Yellow Jacket could become life-threatening. Call 911 immediately if you notice signs of a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction, which includes trouble breathing or wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or mouth, if you become dizzy, you have a rapid heart rate or fainting, and widespread hives or vomiting.
