National Security Adviser John Bolton, considered a hawk among hawks, and a leading figure in the neo-conservative movement, has been fired. The New York Times reported Tuesday that President Trump had fired Mr. Bolton, his third national security adviser, "amid fundamental disagreements over how to handle major foreign policy challenges like Iran, North Korea and most recently Afghanistan."

“I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House,” the president tweeted. “I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service.”

Mr. Bolton offered a different version of his termination, saying that he had initially tendered his resignation.

The appointment of the hawkish Mr. Bolton had dismayed many who had hoped the new president would embrace a less-aggressive defense policy.
