Kia, Hyundai Recalling Several Models
Over the past few years, it's likely you've seen more and more Hyundais and Kias on the road. Both car makers have seen their popularity grow as they specialize in creating affordable commuter cars. However, if you're driving a Hyundai or Kia vehicle around Bismarck-Mandan today, heads-up — both automakers have recalled a combined 168,000 vehicles due to an engine fire risk.
The South Korean motor companies each own minority shares in the other's company.
The recall includes cars dating back to 2011. Kia in particular has had a difficult time in the past nine months. In June, Kia recalled 500,000 vehicles due to concerns their air bags might not inflate.
Models the recall includes:
- Some 2011-2014 Kia Optima
- Some 2012-2014 Kia Sorrento
- Some 2011-2013 Kia Sportage
- Some 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata
- Some 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
Hyundai and Kia said they will notify owners of affected vehicles. Dealers will check the parts in question and replace (for free) if necessary.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, which handles safety notifications and recalls is currently closed due to the partial government shutdown.
