Gordie Howe, one of professional hockey's most enduring stars, has died at 88.

CNN reports Howe's son announced his passing in a statement early Friday.

Howe is best remembered for his years with the NHL Detroit Red Wings where he became the league's all-time leading scorer, a record that held until the rise of Wayne Gretzky.

Howe retired and came out of retirement a number of times, at one point playing alongside his sons.

A native of Saskatchewan, Canada, Howe was staying with his son in Ohio when he passed.
