NDSU Softball Eliminated from NCAA Tournament
The North Dakota State Bison entered a tough softball regional in Norman, OK this weekend in the NCAA Tournament.
It was two teams from Oklahoma that took down NDSU on consecutive days to eliminate them from the tournament and end their season.
On Saturday night, North Dakota State's Jacquelyn Sertic and Tulsa's Emily Watson were in a pitcher's duel as both carried no-hitters into the sixth inning. NDSU got their first hits in the bottom of the sixth when Zoe Stavrou and Stephanie Soriano had back-to-back doubles with Stavrou scoring on the Soriano hit. But the 1-0 lead was short lived.
In the top of the 7th, Tulsa struck back when Maggie Withee scored on an RBI-single by her twin sister, Maddie Withee. Haley Meinen also scored a run on the play due to an error. Tulsa wouldn't surrender the 2-1 in the bottom half of the seventh, as they advanced to the regional championship.
Sertic gave up only three hits in the loss, while striking out seven. Both runs scored by Tulsa were unearned. The loss put the Bison in a rematch from the previous day with Oklahoma.
The Sooners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Shay Knighten and the never looked back. After going up 6-0 entering the sixth inning, the Sooners would put another 4-spot one the board. This time, it was capped off by a three-run home run from Nicole Pendley. Knighten and Pendley each had three hits and four RBIs for OU. The Bison put their only runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Vanessa Anderson hit a two-run home run. That ended the scoring with a 10-2 final, with Oklahoma advancing to the regional final against Tulsa.
North Dakota State finishes their season with a record of 29-33.
