There was a time when North Dakota had a major advantage in terms of rent, real estate and general cost of living.

As the song goes, the times they are a-changing...

According to a new report from the Williston, ND Herald, the oil-patch town of Williston now has the highest rent in the United States, even high than Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

The population of Williston has more than doubled since the 2010 census.  The influx of workers, some of whom earn up to six figures a year have led to increases in rents and prices.

Williston city officials have established an Affordable Housing Committee to address the rent issue.  The state in addition is offering tax breaks to encourage donations to build affordable housing.
