BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Acting North Dakota University System Chancellor Larry Skogen is among 15 people who have applied to fill the job on an interim basis.

Skogen is president of Bismarck State College. The Board of Higher Education in June tabbed him to fill the chancellor spot for about two months while it searches for a longer-term replacement for ousted chancellor Hamid Shirvani. The board bought out Shirvani's contract after months of pressure from critics who questioned his leadership style.

The chancellor position is being filled only on an interim basis because North Dakotans will vote in November 2014 on a proposed constitutional amendment that would eliminate the board and chancellor's office in favor of a three-member commission appointed by the governor.

The board hopes to hire an interim chancellor by late September.
